THE BEST FROM NATURE
Let us remember that dogs and cats are carnivorous and predatory animals. In the past, the dog was a carnivorous animal, but over the centuries, with the approach of man and then with domestication, its eating habits were changed. This slow process has occurred because the close contact between humans and animals has led the latter to share food with humans and to feed on food not consumed by humans. The dog, not being a “pure” omnivore, and not being able to assimilate and digest what humans can consume, is exposed to the main pathologies of the gastrointestinal tract. Recent studies confirm that dogs, compared to wolves, have genetically adapted to a diet rich in starches. The dog’s digestive system is anatomically and physiologically omnivorous and carnivorous; has a shorter digestive tract and faster metabolism. It is perfectly capable of digesting carbohydrates although it does not have suitable salivary enzymes, thanks to pancreatic amylase, these are digested in the small intestine.
Whatever their breed, dogs all come from the man-made domestication of the wolf almost 30,000 years ago. He still shares over 99% of his DNA with the wolf. The food they eat in nature is mostly made of the meat of their prey, with fruit and vegetables found in the stomach of the prey themselves.
Today many croquettes have a high cereal content, we often find them at the first ingredient. Why? Yes you guessed it, cereals are much cheaper than meat or fish and are easier to extrude into the croquette, but wheat, wheat gluten and corn are very unpalatable for dogs and can cause food allergies, causing also the risk of obesity or diabetes, unlike rice, which is a very digestible cereal for dogs. For these reasons, meat or fish must be the first ingredients in dog nutrition.
